Description

This photo is a good 8” x 10” black & white glossy photo reproduction of a Timken Bearings 1959 Magazine Ad featuring the first “RIVER QUEEN”, a BUCYRUS-ERIE 1650-B STRIPPING SHOVEL.
This photo is not up to my usual high standards, as it is slightly grainy as might be expected from a magazine ad. But the photo portion of the shovel itself is quite nice, and records a nice piece of stripping shovel history.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: From the rear cover of the May 21, 1959 issue of
Engineering News Record
is this TIMKEN TAPERED ROLLER BEARING ad, showing a side view of the “RIVER QUEEN”, a BUCYRUS-ERIE 1650-B Stripping Shovel, weighing in at over 2,400 tons and standing 140’ high. Taking 80-ton bites of overburden, it could move 100,000 tons in a 24-hour period, stacking the piles 100’ high.
“RIVER QUEEN” STRIPPING SHOVEL: Taller than a 13-story building, this shovel was used to uncover two seams of bituminous coal in the River Queen Mine near Central City, KY. Equipped with a 145’ boom and an 86’ dipper handle, it could pile the overburden nearly 300’ from the digging point. More than 70 railroad cars were needed to ship this shovel from South Milwaukee, WI. Fifteen General Electric motors powered this shovel, 11 for digging and 4 for propelling. 4-hoist motors were rated at 375-hp each; 3 swing motors at 187-1/2 hp each, 2 crowd motors at 187-1/2 hp each, and 4 200-hp propel motors on each  twin crawler assembly on the 4 corners.
15 electric motors powered this giant, operated by just one shovel operator in an air-conditioned cab. One operator controlled the entire digging operation from his air-conditioned cab, perched 30’ about ground level at the right front corner, providing maximum visibility. A loudspeaker on the boom enabled the operator to communicate with his ground men.
The Peabody Coal Company in partnership with W. G. Duncan Coal Company formed the River Queen Mine in 1956 in Muhlenberg County, KY, expecting the mine to operate for 35 years or more. Peabody eventually bought out Duncan, but the mine was always operated by Peabody Coal Company. Initial mining operations at the River Queen Mine began in 1956 with this new BUCYRUS-ERIE 1650-B shovel, rated at 55-Yards. A few years later this 55-Yard shovel would seem ‘small’ as larger shovel were designed and built. Several years after it began stripping overburden, this shovel suffered a boom failure, but was quickly rebuilt. After operating for a little over 10 years, the 1650-B was replaced with a larger MARION 5960 shovel. The 1650-B was walked across Highway 175 to begin operations at Peabody’s Vogue Mine. When the Vogue Mine was later shut down, the BE 1650-B was dismantled and sent to Peabody’s Riverview Mine. From there is was sold to Green Coal Company, and has most likely since been scrapped.
