This is a
traje (traditional)
and authentic (native) handwoven women’s
manta (shoulder cover) made by indigenous Quechua women of the vicinity of Sucre, Bolivia.
The Quechua speakers are from the 9,000 foot high altiplano region surrounding Sucre, Bolivia.
I collected this weaving directly from the weaver who I met in Sucre, Bolivia in 1978. I would guess that it was actually woven in the 1960‘s
since it is a ceremonial wedding garb and is normally saved for decades after being woven. It has finely woven details.
The llama and sheep wool is in good shape without  holes, rips or repairs. There is only minor fraying in places especially on the edges, a few stains - dark and light.
This is an all-wool (llama and sheep) woman's garment and very nicely woven. It is made from hand-spun wool and hand-woven on an Andean loom.  The base fabric is usually a natural dark brown wool, fairly uniform in color.  The Awayo is made of two separate panels which are sewn together with a simple zig-zag stitch. The dyes appear to be largely vegetal, though there are also some synthetic dyes present in the brighter colors.  I would guess the date to be ca. the 1960’s. There is a simple tubular edging, which shows very minor wear.  Both sides can be seen in the photos, since the animal colors and figures exhibit somewhat differently on the two sides.
