    Description

A spectacular, beautiful, and complex Bolivian aguayo rich in symbols and color. Two dominant broad bands of magenta, red with a tint of blue; outside border stripes of green on one side and indigo on the other along side fine stripes of yellow, indigo, black, green, and orange. Along side the center seam are two adjoining symbol bands which make for a fireworks display of complex design elements reminiscent of ancient Peruvian textiles: serpent or river shapes, diamonds forms connected by lines to triangular head shapes, flowers, horses, birds, and other abstract symbols. If you look closely you can find one human figure blended into the textile. From colors to symbols all elements have meaning to the weaver of this extraordinary piece. I
n general the aguayo elements tell stories of their community and show symbols of their culture according to the regions.
Traditional weaving such as this is the essence of Quechua culture, shaping personal and regional identities, and acting as a form of inter-regional communication that has gone on for centuries. And each woman is proud to have her own aguayo.
