The Steamer Plymouth Rock and Steamer Western World were launched in 1854 by Michigan Central Railroad for service between Buffalo and Detroit. These were the finest steamers on the Great Lakes. The dining hall could seat 200 and the original silver service for each ship cost ,000.
    From Researcher Ken: "
It seems that there was an economic panic in 1857 and the Michigan Central Railroad laid up all three of these palatial passenger/freight steamers that season. By the time the economy recovered, railroad lines around Lake Erie had been completed the the steamers were no longer needed! All three of them were scrapped and their steam engines used in other steamers being built. Two of the hulls, the Plymouth Rock and Western World went to shipyards to be used as floating drydocks in Port Huron and Cleveland."
