This photo is an excellent new reproduction black & white glossy photo of a 1940s WHITE WB-22T Tractor and Semi-Trailer with an early Reefer owned by SWIFT & COMPANY, using the logo on the door “Swift Quality Foods”. Undated, my original vintage photo was taken by The White Motor Company, Advertising Department.

DESCRIPTION: Looking brand new before any road spray, this WB-22T “Super Power” White would have been White 6-cylinder gasoline powered, probably in the 125-hp range. The photo was taken with a slight sprinkling of snow on the ground. Mounted on the nose of the semi-trailer is a very modern looking reefer unit (for the 1940s). Note the platform on the roof of the cab, to access and service the reefer unit. This 8x10 photo has a white border on all 4 sides.
WHITE WB SERIES: The White WB Series was a popular fleet road tractor in the post-war USA, replacing the WA Series that had been introduced in 1941 and before the WC Series was introduced in 1947. The WB Series still used the stylish cabs designed by the Russian Count Alexis De Sakhnoffsky in 1936. The WB-22 may have been the most popular size of the WB Series during this period, long before the Interstate Highway System was started, short trailers were still the norm, and gross weights were still relatively low, long before the shift to diesel power. The narrow WB cab was pretty spartan, with bench-type seat, simple dash gauges, and two-stick transmission or 2-speed rear axles … a cramped cab with not much room for a big man. Small round rearview mirrors were standard, and turn signals and rear mud flaps not yet an option. The WB Series was distinguished by the raised “bubble” air vent on the cowl in the center of the hood.  This air vent could be opened from inside the cab to bring fresh air into the driver and his passenger, long before the days of air conditioning. I believe the WB Series still used a wooden frame structure under the cab sheet metal.  A friend of mine once told me he drove a WB White in the early 1950s during his college days. He said the drivers always welcomed a rainy day, so that the moisture would swell the wood slightly and keep the doors from rattling.
SWIFT & COMPANY: Founded in 1855  by 16 year old Gustavus Swift in Eastham, MA, Swift eventually moved to Chicago and the Union Stock Yards. Swift presided over a meat-packing empire in the Midwest during the late 19th Century. Gustavus Swift pioneered the refrigerated railroad car, the first practical ice-cooled railroad car in the 1870s. Swift lead the way in revolutionizing how meat was processed, delivered, and sold. Swift also played a vital role in establishing the modern American business system, with an emphasis on mass production, functional specialization managerial expertise, national distribution networks and adaptation to technological innovation. Henry Ford stated in his autobiography that it was a visit to a Chicago slaughterhouse which opened his eyes to the virtues of employing a moving conveyor system and fixed work stations in industrial applications. In addition to meatpacking, Swift also sold various dairy and grocery items. But times change, and in the 1960s Swift expanded into other fields. After many acquisitions and mergers, Swift & Company is now headquartered in Greeley, CO and is owned by Brazilian giant JBS S.A.
CONDITION: This outstanding black & white glossy photo is a newly reproduced photo from a photo in my personal lifetime collection.  This photo has been printed on excellent quality HP PREMIUM PLUS GLOSSY PHOTO PAPER using HP 02 Vivera Inks, producing a professional quality photo that resists fading over 100 years ... the best money can buy.  This 8x10 photo has a white border around the photo.
