Description
This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white new photo reproduction of a 1940s STERLING Logger hauling a huge load of logs on the highway.”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This Sterling factory photo is most likely an HC or HD Model, probably with chain-drive and diesel engine. The diesel was most likely a Cummins HB600 150-hp, and the chain-drive was the Sterling dual chain-drive with the Sterling super traction differential. This photo was taken along the highway, with a pair of late 1930s automobiles in the background. A semaphore-type turn signal can barely be seen behind the driver standing along side his tractor, a familiar west coast feature in the 1940s. This original photo is from the late Fred J. Perkins collection. Fred was a well known Sterling enthusiast from Weston, MA.
STERNBERG MOTOR TRUCK CO/STERLING MOTORS: The Sternberg family created Sternberg Manufacturing Co. in Milwaukee in 1906, building on their combined experience in long-established machine shops, foundries, and forges. The first Sternberg truck was assembled in 1907, and they were soon building trucks of 2-Ton, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 7-Ton models. In July 1914 the company became the Sternberg Motor Truck Company, then became the Sterling Motor Truck Company in July 1915, for various reasons including the existence of strong anti-German sentiment coming with WWI. An interesting Sternberg ad in 1914 claimed that every Sternberg truck built in the past 8 years, was still in service as of that date … “a record - not of one truck -but the entire output … explaining why Sternberg was a successful concern.”
Sterling Motors continued producing heavy duty trucks in Milwaukee from 1915-1952. Known primarily for staying with chain driven trucks much longer than any other producer in severe-service models, they also produced worm gear enclosed final drive models in smaller numbers, especially for the west coast highway market. Sterling was purchased by The White Motor Company in 1951, and rebadged as Sterling-Whites. Milwaukee production moved to Cleveland in 1953. With White’s acquisition of Autocar in 1953, and with Sterling-White only producing 250 trucks in 1952, White terminated Sterling-White production in 1953. Approximately 12,000 Sterlings were produced over their 50 year lifetime.
