DESCRIPTION: The DIAMOND T Model 931C in this photo was owned by PILOT FREIGHT CARRIERS, INC. of Winston-Salem, NC. The tractor in this photo has a small sleeper box extending from the rear of the cab. This photo has a white border around all 4 sides.
DIAMOND T: In 1951 Diamond T dropped their lighter models and introduced a new series of heavy duty trucks. Among them was the Model 931C, a tall line-haul tilt-cab sharing cabs with the Reo Model, the two companies having been acquired in 1957 and 1958 by White Motor Co. The 931C was made in both gas and diesel models, the tractor in this photo being a diesel. Diamond T was referred to by many as “the Cadillac of trucks”. In 1960 Diamond T manufacturing was moved to the Reo factory in Lansing, MI. As a separate division of White, Diamond T built 4,000 trucks in 1966, nevertheless the two marques were merged in 1968 to form Diamond Reo. Diamond T had produced about 250,000 trucks since 1911. Diamond Reo of Lansing was forced into bankruptcy in 1974, although several new owners have produced trucks under the Diamond Reo name since then. If you have any information on this truck or photo, please let me know. Thanks!
PILOT FREIGHT CARRIERS, INC.: Founded in 1941 just 5 days prior to Pearl Harbor, they began operations with 12 trucks and 20 people, with general offices in Winston-Salem, NC. Pilot grew rapidly, south into Georgia, west into Tennessee and Kentucky, and north into New York and Massachusetts. Their motto was: “Service Is Our Frame of Mind”. In the 1980s Pilot was sold to the TNT group, becoming TNT Pilot. In 1989 they were sold again to U. S. Truck Lines, who sold almost 700 tractors and 1400 trailers ... another once proud motor carrier from the “Golden Age of Trucking” gone from the highways, but not from out memories.
