DESCRIPTION: This heavy duty Peterbilt 4x6 dump truck is working in a CONROCK (California) aggregate mining operation. With twin telescopic hydraulic hoists, the truck is dumping its load into a hopper of an aggregate crusher. This Model 381 has the oval ‘Peterbilt’ logo on the radiator. CONROCK Fleet No. 7707, is showing signs of long severe use with lots of bumps, twists and tears. While the year the truck was manufactured is unknown, the photo would have been taken in 1972 or later, when the newly formed CONROCK was renamed.
HISTORY OF THE PETERBILT MODEL 381: Built from 1954 to 1974, the Model 381 was designed specifically for off-highway applications. Popular in logging, oilfield, construction & mining, these heavy duty units were custom built for each customers needs. Only 391 units were built in their 21 year production span. The Model 381 had a heavy duty bumper, heavy radiator guard mounted in rubber, shielded headlights, heavy Diamonette tread plate fenders, double frame construction with rigid cross members, and heavy duty axles with large tires. Optional types and sizes of engines were available, including Diesel, gasoline and butane.
HISTORY OF CONROCK: Based in Los Angeles, Consolidated Rock Products Co. had been incorporated in 1929, with the consolidation of Reliance Rock Co. and Union Rock Co. and its subsidiaries, of which some dated back to 1909. The combined company manufactured, sold and distributed crushed rock, gravel, and sand for the construction industry. Consolidated Rock Products had some financially disastrous years in the 1930s and 1940s, filing bankruptcy a number of times, always managing to reorganize. By 1968 the company was southern California’s top supplier of a broad range of construction materials, with a network of 48 plants and service yards. The company renamed itself CONROCK CO. in 1972. In 1984 Conrock merged with California Portland Cement, and took on the name of CalMat Co.
