    ABOUT CEHKO / MISTER SENKO
Evstati Christ Karayonchev - Mister Senko / Cehko -- was born on February 12, 1905 in Vratsa, Bulgaria. In 1923, as a young Bulgarian orphan, Evstati became the assistant to touring French magician Delaunay, the "Mysterious Turk," who imparted the secrets of illusion to the young man. With a single illusion bequeathed by his French master, Evstati began touring the country, performing in public squares, schools and barns. From the outset the young magician's name was "Shadows." In honor of his mentor, Evstati adopted the name "Mystery Shadows." Due to a typo, the posters printed for his performances read "Mister Senko" and Bulgarians embraced that as his pseudonym.
By 1925, he began touring as a professional magician. Creating his own show and performing 20 illusions with a troupe of 10 assistants, Cehko/Mister Senko gained international fame. Among his most famous illusions were his "electric chair," "cutting a woman with a circular saw" and "removing the head." In 1939, before The International Congress of Illusionists' Art in Berlin, he first showed his crowning number. Before the astonished eyes of the most famous magicians in the world he appeared holding his head in his hand -- AS DEPICTED ON THIS RARE POSTER! For this illusion, in 1961 he was awarded the Special Prize of the American Association of Magicians. After performing the illusion in Hollywood before the biggest stars of cinema, an event shown on a US newsreel, he became an international celebrity.
He was named an "Honorary Member" of the the Associations of Magicians in the United States, Germany and France. The French Academy awarded him their highest honor - the "Order Robert Houdin" medal. He was elected honorary president of the Bulgarian Club Magical. He became an honorary citizen of Paris and Sofia. And thanks to Mr. Senko, Bulgaria joined the European and the World Organization of magicians. For decades he performed throughout the world, including New York, London, Paris, Tokyo and Moscow.
In 1965 Mister Senko celebrated his 60th anniversary as a performer with his final stage show. He died in Bulgaria's capital city of Sofia in 1987 at 82 years of age. He remains an important, influential and inspirational figure in the world of magic.
