Artist John Atherton (1900 – 1952). A Minnesota born painter and graphic designer, Atherton worked most of his life in New York City as a surrealism landscape painter and a commercial artist designing ads for companies like The Container Corporation, General Motors, Shell Oil Company and painting covers for The Saturday Evening Post. This poster design for the world’s fair gained him national recognition.
Poster features Atherton's depiction of Libertas, the Roman goddess and personification of Liberty. She supports a globe out from which are the two famous structures built for the fair - the Trylon (the spire) and the Perisphere (the sphere).
