Description
This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy photo reproduction of a 1954 AUTOCAR DC10564S-OH with a Concrete Mixer, owned by MATERIAL SERVICE CORP., Chicago, IL.”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: My original photo is a vintage Autocar factory photo taken in 1954, of an Autocar DC10564S-OH with a Concrete Mixer. By its serial number, it would have been a 1954 model and carries a 1954 Illinois license plate. This mixer truck was powered by an HRB Cummins diesel, with 5x3 Fuller transmissions, an 18,000# front axle, and 42,000# rear tandem. Empty weight of this hefty Autocar mixer weighed 28,000#. While I’m not sure of all the Autocar model designations, I do know that the ‘OH’ at the end stood for ‘Off Highway’ strength and durability. Another Autocar Mixer can been seen in the far distance.
MATERIAL SERVICE CORPORATION: Founded in 1919 by the three Crown brothers, as a brokerage buying and reselling sand and gravel. They rapidly expanded by purchasing pits, mines, quarries, and factories to produce lime, pipe, stone, coal, and cement. Starting in 1938 they operated the Thornton Quarry, south of Chicago, one of the largest limestone quarries in the world. in 1959 Material Service Corp. became part of General Dynamics Corp, a leading military contractor. Financial problems caused the Crown family to sell their interest in General Dynamics in 1965, but soon repurchased enough GD stock to gain control of the company, along with the Material Service division. By the early 1980s, Material Service had become the leading distributor and producer of building materials in the Midwest, employing some 3,000 employees. In 2006 General Dynamics sold its Material Service Corp. to Britain’s Hanson PLC, retaining the Material Service name and management team. At that time, Material Service was the 13th largest producer of construction aggregates in America, with more than 800 employees. I was told that while Hanson purchased the aggregate business, the ready-mix concrete business had been sold to Palumbo Bros. in the early 1990s, and then resold to Prairie Materials.
PRAIRIE MATERIALS: Information on the internet in 2016 said Prairie Materials, in business since 1948, was one of the largest ready-mixed concrete producers in the Midwest, operating 78 concrete plants and 19 material yards in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan … with more than 1800 employees and more than 1200 mixer trucks. In 2008, Prairie was acquired by Votorantim Cimentos Cement North America from Brazil, with roots back to 1918 and locations on five continents.
