DESCRIPTION: This Clarkson owned MARION 111-M Shovel is loading a variety of bottom dumps on a 1949-1951 project. The bottom dump being loaded is a EUCLID Bottom Dump. Behind the Euc is an interesting tandem axle dual tired DART tractor pulling a SOUTHWESTERN Belly Dump. Over the top of the Marion shovel, a pair of late 1930s and 1940s automobiles are parked. The CEDAR BLUFF DAM in Trego County, KS was built for the Bureau of Reclamation for irrigation, flood control, and recreation. Between 1949 and 1951, Clarkson moved 8,500,000 CY of earth building this 6,800+ acre reservoir with 50 miles of shoreline.
MARION 111-M SHOVEL: Introduced in 1946 as a 3-1/2 to 4 CY machine with all the benefits of diesel power, plus the advantage of electric swing. Big enough for high daily production, yet easily moved from one job to another. Later increaseDAM d to 4-5 CY capacity, a total of 379 111-M shovels, cranes, and draglines were produced during its life from 1946-1974.
CLARKSON CONSTRUCTION CO.: From the muscle days of men, mules and horses, George Clarkson founded his grading company in 1898 in the riverside boomtown of Kansas City. Ed Clarkson worked for List & Clark for a number of years, before forming Miller-Clarkson in 1942. In 1947 Ed Clarkson formed his own company, with Bill Clarkson, Sr. later becoming president. Clarkson Construction Co., now in its fifth or sixth generation, family-owned Clarkson Construction has become one of the Midwest’s largest and most diversified heavy Contractors.
