DESCRIPTION: This MACK AC tractor is pulling what looks to be a ROGERS Arched-Gooseneck Lowboy Trailer loaded with a heavy industrial machine of some sort.
THE ROGER SHERMAN TRANSFER CO.: was based in East Hartford, CT on 150-acres, with yards in Albany, New Haven, Boston, and Springfield, MA. One of the largest firms of its type in Southern New England from the late 1890s until the 1960s and 1970s, Roger Sherman did it all … from bridge, building, and road construction to heavy hauling, rigging, and demolition … all with an outstanding reputation. In the 1950s and 1960s the company operated more than 50 cranes, mostly Link-Belts & Lorains, many that had been modified on their own Mack and Autocar carriers. Sherman’s truck fleet consisted mostly of Macks, Autocars, Brockway, and a few Sterlings. As business opportunities shrank in the 1960s, the company was liquidated, much of the fleet being purchased by Savin Brothers, Hallamore, and Dallas & Mavis Specialized Carriers. The office was demolished to make way for the I-84 - Route 2 Interchange.
MACK “AC”:  The famous Mack Model “AC” was the truck that made Mack famous around the world, and was known as the “Bulldog” Mack for its rugged dependability in WWI Europe ... a nickname that stuck and gave rise to the phrase “Tough as a Mack truck”.  Some 40,200 “AC” Macks were produced from 1916 to 1938, one of the longest production runs of any model truck.  Built with a 4-cylinder gas engine and a 4-speed transmission with chain-drive, the “AC” was well suited for tough construction work.  The split side-radiator behind the engine, allowed for a sloping hood design and better driver visibility.  A ‘motometer’ sits atop the center of the rear mounted radiator, for the driver to monitor engine temperature, manually opening and closing the side radiator louvers to cool or warm the engine.
