    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of a 1940’s MACK Model L Diesel Tractor with a small integral sleeper cab, operated by UNITED AVOCADO GROWERS of La Habra, CA, pulling an Aluminum Sided Reefer Semi-Trailer.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on the actual photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION:  This Mack L diesel tractor could be either an LF, an LH, or an LJ. It was photographed on the streets of Chicago in 1948 by the famous late Joe Wanchura, truck driver and well known photographer. The reefer unit on the trailer is an early nose mounted Thermo King with a platform on the roof of the tractor to service the reefer unit, as well as ice bunker doors on the top nose of the trailer. The trailer also has a right side door for curb delivery3. The trailer advertises “The Finest Avocados in the World”. The tractor and trailer also have signs for “King Salad” on the front corner of the trailer and the front fenders of the tractor, as well as “The Avocado Specialist” on the tractor door.
UNITED AVOCADO GROWERS of La Habra, CA: La Habra, CA is a city of 60,000+ in the NW corner of Orange County, CA, in the metro Los Angeles area. The Hass Avocado was first grown from a seed in 1926 and sold by Rudolph Hass, a mail carrier and amateur horticulturist, from his small grove in La Habra Heights, CA. Owing to its taste, size, shelf-life, high growing yield, and year around harvesting, the Hass Avocado is the most commercially popular avocado worldwide. In the U.S. it accounts for more than 80% of the avocado crop, and 95% of the California crop.
THE MACK L MODELS: Introduced in 1940, the new line of L Model Macks were designed for heavy highway haulage using the recently introduced Mack Thermodyne gasoline engine. In later years, most became diesel powered. Many of the LF, LM, and LJ Models were difficult to tell apart in appearance. Some 31,000 L Models were built between 1940 and 1956.
The Model “LF” was the smallest of the L Series, usually equipped with the 510-cid Thermodyne gasoline engine.  Most LF’s were used for highway applications, and achieved instant success as highway tractors.  Some 12,453 were built between 1940 and 1953, with most of them built after 1945 due to WWII war time production.
The Model “LM” was primarily designed for long distance hauling, and would be equipped with either the 707-cid Thermodyne gasoline engine or the 743-cid Cummins diesel. 822 were built between 1940 and 1953.
Many Model “LJ” Macks were very similar in appearance in the 1940s. Engine choices were either the Mack 707 gasoline engine, the 672- cid Mack diesel engine, or a few optional Cummins diesels. Over 13,930 LJ’s were built between 1940 and 1956, making it the most popular of the L Model line.
