    Description

This is an interesting high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of a mid-1930s 6-Cylinder ‘AC’  MACK carrier mounted with a NORTHWEST Model 25 Clamshell Crane, loading aggregate into a Model ‘FJ’ MACK Dump Truck. This same photo appeared in NORTHWEST sales literature in the mid-1930s. All equipment was owned by CONSOLIDATED CARTING CORP. of New York City.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: Northwest began to offer machines for truck mounting in the mid-1930s. Around 1937 Northwest jumped into the market, mounting their smaller Models 15, 18 & 25 on customer supplied carriers with reinforced frames. Mack was the most popular 4x6 mounting, with FWD’s often used for 6x6 mountings. The crane carrier in this photo appears to me to be a 6-Cylinder ‘AC’ MACK which became available in 1930 with a longer hood to accommodate its larger engine, but was still chain-driven. Built with tandem axle to handle the weight of the crane, and the cab modified to carry the boom beside the 1/2-cab for transit. The NORTHWEST in this photo is a Model 25, rated as a 3/4 CY machine. The dump truck being loaded is heavily sideboarded, so again I’m guessing the it may be a Model ‘FJ’ MACK with a GVW of 45,000 lbs. and was equipped with the standard 6-cylinder 518-cid EO gasoline engine. If  it truly was an ‘FJ’, only 322 were built between 1938 and 1943.
The location of this photo was most likely along the New York City waterfront.
If you have any information on this photo, I would appreciate hearing from you.
MACK’S ‘SUPER-DUTY’ ‘F’ SERIES LINE: By the mid-1930s, the AC and AP were dated vehicles, designed some 20 years before. To remain competitive, MACK designed a new line of off-highway trucks and named them the ‘Super-Duty’ line. Some 1700 Super-Duty trucks were built between 1937 and 1950. With few exceptions, all were chain driven and the smaller models served as dump trucks or concrete mixers in the construction and mining industries. The FG, FH, FJ, and FK were all basically similar, but with larger tires and beefed up chassis as GVW increased. 162 Model FGs were built between 1937 and 1941, with a GVW of 40,000 pounds, and standard 6-cylinder 468-cid CF gasoline engine. 265 Model FHs were built between 1938 and 1942, with a GVW of 35,000 pounds, and standard 6-cylinder 518-cid EO gasoline engine. 322 Model FJs were built between 1938 and 1943, with a GVW of 45,000 pounds, and standard 6-cylinder 518-cid EO gasoline engine. I don’t believe the dump truck in the photo to be the larger Model FK or Model FC, many of which were used as tractors.
