Description
This photo is a high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of a NORTHWEST SHOVEL owned by RUSCIANO & SON CORP. of the Bronx; noted as a MODEL 70.This undated photo is slightly confusing to me, as the excellent reference book
“The Story of Northwest Engineering Company”
by Folsom & Torres states: the MODEL 6 began production in 1930, and the MODEL 70 is not mentioned at all. The shovel is loading a large boulder into a MODEL AC MACK Dump Truck during the construction of the approach to the GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE in NYC.
This is photo #2 of 2 Northwest and Mack photos taken on this project.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: The original undated photo was taken for Northwest Engineering Co. The box in the lower left corner is faded. but appears to refer to a Model 70 Northwest Shovel, although it looks more like a Model 6 to me? The contractor was Rusciano & Son Corp. of the Bronx. The MACK is a Model AC, and could be a standard Model AC 4-cylinder with a wider side radiator, or could be an AC6 6-cylinder which did have the wider side radiator.
GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE: This double-decked suspension bridge spans the Hudson River, connecting Manhattan in NYC to Fort Lee, NJ. Construction began in October 1927 and was opened to traffic in October 1931.
NORTHWEST SHOVEL: My Northwest information does not mention a Model 70 as appears in the information box on the lower left. My guess is that if this is a Model 70, it may be using the newer sheet metal used on the 1930 Model 6.
If you have any other information, I’d appreciate hearing from you.
RUSCIANO & SON CORP. from Bronx, NY: From what I have learned, the company was an excavating company founded by Vincent Rusciano, with his son Anthony Rusciano later serving as president. Anthony died in 2006, but the company still survives in some form.
MACK AC: This could be a Super-Duty Model AC6 MACK, which was built from 1930 to 1938, with a nominal rating of 7-1/2 tons. Since this photo seems to be pre-1930, this may be a standard Mack AC with a larger side-vent radiator? If it is an AC6, it was a chain drive truck was powered with a Mack 6-cylinder 128-hp gasoline engine through a 4-speed transmission. The traditional chain-drive was retained on these new Bulldogs due to its preference in the construction industry, where the AC then received the bulk of its sales. The AC was designed to take abuse from sudden loads, uneven ground, and steep grades, found in construction work. Contractors preferred the chain-drive for its strength, efficiency, and dependability. Building projects in the early and mid-1930s helped to keep up the demand for the AC ‘Bulldog’, even after its heyday had passed.
