Description
This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of a MACK ‘SENIOR’ Truck carrying a 1913 NY Commercial License Plate, posed in front of a heavy wagon and team of draft horses.”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: My photo appears to be a Mack Factory photo of a MACK SENIOR 5 to 7-1/2 ton chain drive truck, with s/n: C446M10024. Note the riveted pressed steel frame, the brass radiator with the ‘Mack’ script, the gas head lamps, the sturdy heavy spoke wheels and hard rubber tires, the right hand steering wheel, the rolled side curtains, the oil can mounted below the grab-handle on the side of the cab, the outboard-mounted brake lever similar to the earlier wagons, the chain-drive, and the unusual riveted body on the back of the truck. Location is unknown, but from the several derrick booms in the background, this photo maya have been taken at a construction site or along a waterfront dock area. What a Classic Photo!!
EARLY HISTORY OF MACK: As many of you know, the Mack brothers built their first commercial motor vehicle shortly after 1900. At that time America’s intercity freight was being moved by rail, and intracity freight was carried on horse-drawn trucks. Jack and Gus Mack took over an existing wagon works in Brooklyn, NY in 1893. Joined by other brothers, the Macks began building sightseeing buses. By 1905 the Mack brothers had purchased a large building for manufacturing in Allentown, PA, and incorporated as the Mack Brothers Motor Car Company in Pennsylvania, with the Mack Brothers Manufacturing Company remaining in Brooklyn. The automotive industry was still in its infancy. While the Macks interest was in commercial vehicles, their first Manhattan buses were generally called motor cars, hence the name of their enterprise. Their first motor trucks were built in 1905, with a Mack-built 4-cylinder engine rated at 50-60 horsepower … which was produced with little change until about 1915, adding to the Mack reputation for building durable and adequately powered heavy-duty motor trucks. By 1909 Mack introduced new truck models with pressed steel frames, calling the 1 and 1-1/2-ton trucks the Junior line, and trucks over 2-ton the Senior line. Also in 1909 Mack added a heavy-duty 7-1/2 ton, along with a 6-ton in 1910. Early in 1910, the 5th Mack brother joined the company. About that time the trade name “Manhattan” was dropped, and all motor vehicles leaving the Allentown plant carried the neat script sign “MACK”. From 1905 to 1916 Mack built 2,341 trucks of the 1-ton to 4-ton size, and 654 trucks from 5-ton to 7-1/2-ton. The all-steel cab ‘AB’ was introduced in 1914, along with the rugged ‘AC’ in 1916 … and as they say, the rest is history, producing over 91,000 of these popular models into 1938, making the phrase “Built Like A Mack Truck” known around the world.
