DESCRIPTION: This excellent photo reproduction is of an AUTOCAR factory photo taken on October 4, 1949. A DC200, one of the largest Autocars made, must have been the pride of the fleet, and certainly the talk of the town when it was delivered. Look at the size of the rubber on this Autocar! The shovel is a NORTHWEST 80-D, rated at 2-1/2 to 3 CY, one of the most popular Northwest models ever built. M. A. GAMMINO was a very large and prominent Rhode Island road builder and aggregate producer. Some parts of Gammino were sold to Tilcon, a subsidiary of the Oldcastle Group.
In September 2014 I was told by a great eBayer that this Gammino Autocar was purchased by Rosenfeld Concrete to use as a winch truck to rescue stuck concrete mixers. Eventually this Autocar was beautifully restored by the late Dave Mauro, and now ‘lives’ a new life in Massachusetts.
NORTHWEST ENGINEERING CO.: of Green Bay, WI was a popular large shovel/dragline/pullshovel manufacturer from around 1920, having its roots in the ship building industry. Known for their quality, heavy excavators, Northwest had its peak years in the 1940s into the 1960s with its cable machines from its Model 25 3/4-cy machine up to its huge 180D/190D shovels and draglines. Northwest did manufacture some hydraulic excavators, but they were never successful. As the company recovered from bankruptcy in the 1980s, the corporate shell became the nucleus of the new TEREX Corporation, which is still a leader in construction equipment manufacturing today.
NORTHWEST MODEL 80-D:The Northwest Model 80-D Shovel powered with a MURPHY Diesel engine, rated at 2-1/2 to 3 CY, was developed in 1937 from the Model 80, and was produced until 1985. Northwest prided itself in producing “Real Rock Shovels”. The popular 80-D shovel used a proven ‘dual-crowd’ mechanism, the low speed Murphy diesel engine, a rugged drive train, stout boom, cast manganese dipper and sturdy cast bases with husky crawlers. Perhaps more than any other Northwest machine, the 80-D was their signature machine, representing the best in cable design.
