DESCRIPTION: This LIMA 2400 Dragline is one of two LIMA 2400’s owned by LEHIGH ANTHRACITE COAL near Tamaqua, PA. The original photo was taken by well known equipment and mining enthusiast Keith Haddock.
LEHIGH ANTHRACITE COAL: From what I see on the internet in early 2020, Lehigh Anthracite Coal operates in one of the nation’s richest anthracite coal reserves, on their 8,000 acre Lehigh Anthracite Mine … the largest surface mining permit in Pennsylvania. They produce up to 500,000 tons of anthracite coal year.
LIMA MODEL 2400 SHOVEL & DRAGLINE: More than 650+ of the popular Lima Model 2400’s were produced from 1948 to 1969, when the larger 2400B was introduced. The original Model 2400s were rated at 6-CY, weighing 218 tons, with crawler shoes of 55” or 63” on a 25’ long crawler assembly, swinging a boom up to 120’ long. A Caterpillar D379 diesel engine supplied up to 547 flywheel horsepower. The original Lima Machine Works was established in Lima, OH in 1878 to build railroad locomotives, then steam shovels. Eventually becoming Lima-Hamilton in 1947, and Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in 1951, they exited the locomotive market in 1956, continuing to build construction equipment. The popular Lima excavator/crane line ranged from a small Model 24 1/2-Yd machine to the large model 2400. Sold to Clark Equipment in 1970, the manufacture of the Clark-Lima lines was dropped in 1980. The former Lima shops were closed in 1980 and sold, then torn down in 1998.
