LEHIGH VALLEY RR CAST BRONZE ASHTRAY/MATCHBOOK HOLDER
This unusual cast bronze ashtray and matchbook holder was made for the Lehigh Valley Railroad. The company’s distinctive flag in a wreath logo, matching their markings on china and silverware is displayed on both sides of the matchbook holder in high relief. The ashtray is in excellent condition overall, with a spot of verdigris in the bowl. It appears to have been cleaned at some time and actually looks a little warmer than the photos. The piece has the maker’s mark “Rothschild Bros. Ithaca, NY” stamped on the bottom. It weighs a little over a pound, is 3-1/4” tall, and measures 5-1/4” over the base. It was probably used in a lounge car or perhaps on a table in a diner. Judging from the marking, it would appear to date from 1910-1915. A striking piece, I've not seen another.
