DESCRIPTION: This heavy-duty STERLING-WHITE was one of the last built, between 1952-1954 when purchased by The White Motor Co. Looking brand-new in this photo, without the tire even mounted on the spare rim on the gooseneck. This Sterling-White was pulling a ROGERS Jeep, making it a tri-axle tractor, and a heavy ROGERS Tri-Axle Drop Deck Removable Gooseneck Lowboy Trailer … most likely the ‘Pride of the Fleet’!
J. R. CIANCHETTE: A heavy contractor from Pittsfield, Maine. There was also a J. R. Cianchette Sons Corp. Both companies filed for Chapter XI Bankruptcy in 1961. Four other Cianchette brothers founded CIANBRO in 1949, which is one of the largest, most diversified, successful, open shop 100% employee owned construction companies in the nation, operating in over 40 states with over 4,000 employees. Alton Cianchette was a U. S. Senator from Maine in past years, and other Cianchette family members have also been politically active.
STERLING MOTOR TRUCK COMPANY: Located in Milwaukee, WI, the company was known at Sternberg from 1907 to 1913, when the name was changed to Sterling. An expensive, but very popular heavy-duty truck, Sterling was one of the last to use chain-drive axles. Very popular in California in the 1930s and throughout New England, Sterling was an early user of diesel engines, using both Waukesha and Cummins “H” 6-cylinder diesels. One of Sterlings selling points was the use of an oak timber insert pressed into the frame rails for additional support … patented in 1922 and used to the end. White Motors acquired Sterling in 1952, moving production to Cleveland, and changing the name to Sterling-White. Production ended in 1954. Total production over their 40+ year life was around 12,000 units. The Sterling Motor Truck Co. had no connection to the Sterling brand used briefly in the Freightliner/Mercedes family.
