This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of a HUG Truck publicity photo of a new fleet of 5 1927 HUG ‘Roadbuilder’ 2-batch trucks, built for the McKECHNIE-PEIRCE CO. of Toledo, OH. The Hug trucks are believed to be 1927 models.”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: The Hug trucks in this photo were a small fleet of 5 new, what is believed to be, 1927 Model ’84’ Hug ‘Roadbuilders’ open cab batch trucks purchased by McKechnie-Peirce capable of carrying a maximum load of 7600 lbs. in a hydraulic underbody St. Paul power hoist 3-yard body, which was the equivalent of two 6-bag concrete batches. A divider board, separating the 2 batches, was mounted in the middle of the dump body, manually tripped by a laborer on the left side of the truck. These Model ’84’ trucks had a Brown-Lipe 5-speed forward 2-speed reverse transmission, with a low gear for unusual pulls and an over gear for returning empty with a speed of 40 mph. Equipped with dual 36 x 6 rear tires, they were powered by a Buda 4-cylinder heavy duty truck engine, had a 6” I-Beam frame, and double reduction full floating rear axle. Total Hug production for 1927 totaled 451 trucks of various designs. One of these MeKechine-Peirce HUG trucks lasted into the late 1950s as a hand-crank boom truck used in the shop area.
HUG TRUCKS: C. J. Hug of Highland, IL was an early roadbuilder in Illinois from the ‘teens. He found the standard trucks of that day, unable to stand up under the severe operating conditions in road construction. In 1920 he began to develop a motor truck to meet his own expectations. In 1922 he established The Hug Company in his hometown of Highland, IL. He called his first 1-1/2 ton Hug truck, the “Hug Speed Truck” after several years of experimentation. Larger capacity trucks were offered in following years, building trucks as large as 20-ton capacity by 1937. Smaller trucks were powered with Buda gasoline engines, and some of the larger trucks were powered with Caterpillar diesels, later with Waukesha and Cummins engines. Both 4x2 and 6x4 shaft driven and chain driven trucks were built over the years. A large 120,000 lb. GVW was built in 1938. Several large models were offered for earthmoving on roads and dams. Both conventional cab models and cab-over models were built, some even with REO sheet metal. They even ventured into buses, some of which were built at the Wayne plant in Richmond, IN. 1942 was the final year for Hug trucks, marking a 20-year history with a total production of 4.014 units sold in 41 states and 7 foreign countries.
McKECHNIE-PEIRCE CO.: Formed in 1921 in Toledo, OH, McKechnie-Peirce was a partnership of Herb McKechnie, a former City Engineer of Toledo, and my grandfather, Raymond Peirce, who had gotten his experience laying wooden block factory floors and city pavements in the ‘teens. McKechnie-Peirce was the predecessor to The Peirce Construction Co. formed in 1939 by Raymond Peirce and my father, Richard Peirce. The Peirce Construction Company became a prominent heavy/highway contractor operating in a 4-state area from 1921 to 1982, later based in the Toledo suburb of Holland, Ohio. Peirce performed interstate highway work including earth moving and concrete paving, major city streets, deep sewer and sewer tunnel work, heavy waterlines, site work, and flood control. I was a partner in the company from 1961-1982. When the Jimmy Carter-induced construction recession dried up the work in our market in 1980, and as the Interstate Highway program was substantially completed, we elected to quit the construction industry, finish our work and liquidated. At that time we were doing a volume of million a year with 325 employees. Forke Bros. Auctioneers held 3 equipment auctions over 4 days in 1981 and 1982 for us as we finished our projects.
