DESCRIPTION: During the 1960s The Horvitz Company, a large and prominent heavy/highway contractor in the greater Cleveland area operated a large fleet of these DC7564 Autocar Diesel tandem tractors pulling Fruehauf ‘Bathtub’ semi-dumps. These Autocars were powered by Cummins NHE-195 engines with 12-speed ‘Unitized’ transmissions, and had a 16M front axles and 44M SRDD rear axles. In this photo, the 3 Autocar-Fruehauf semi-dumps that are visible are being loaded granular material by KOLMAN Belt Loader.
I remember when Horvitz bought this big fleet of Autocar-Fruehauf dumps for a large interstate highway excavation job in the Cleveland area in the early 1960s, where they top loaded under a large 60” Kolman belt loader fed by CAT D-9 bulldozers. Sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s, this fleet of Autocars was converted into concrete haulers with Maxon side dump and agitor concrete bodies, that were used up into the late 1980s.
THE HORVITZ COMPANY: The Horvitz Company got their beginning in 1916 when Samuel Horvitz founded The Highway Construction Company in Cleveland. By the early 1930s they had become the largest paving contractor in Ohio. In the booming 1920s the company also built much of the new city of Hollywood, FL. After the crash of 1929, the developer went broke and Horvitz ended up owning 90% of the entire city and went on to develop much of the present city. Horvitz built a huge amount of the interstate systems in the greater Cleveland area. The family also ventured into newspapers, cable TV companies, concrete, lumber & block businesses. By 1989 22 of their companies were sold and the construction company was liquidated.
