    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of a late 1950s AUTOCAR MODEL A10264 Tractor operated by H. J. JEFFRIES TRUCK LINE, Oklahoma City pulling a CEDARAPIDS Portable Aggregate Screening Plant. The Owner/Operator of the Autocar was F. L. Clark of Oklahoma City, OK.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION:  This Autocar A10264 was a lightweight over-the-road tractor with many lightweight components, riding on a 207” wb with 10.00-22 tires, with a Cummins 180-hp diesel engine, 10 speed transmission, and SQHD rear axles rated at 38,000 lbs. This tractor was equipped with a distinctive grille guard and a cab protector mounted behind the cab, to hang his tie-down chains and binders. The owner-operator of this tractor was F. L. Clark of Oklahoma City.
AUTOCAR A SERIES: This lightweight-designed series was introduced in 1958 as Autocar’s answer to carry more payload, and to adhere to a variety of weight and length regulations. Aluminum frames and the Autocar Aluminum Drivers Cab were among the weight-saving features. The aluminum frame was 1/3 the weight of steel, and the frame rails were drilled, not punched, and the entire assembly was put together with self-locking nuts and bolts instead of rivets. The Autocar Aluminum Driver Cab featured a walnut finish instrument panel that required the removal of only three screws to tilt it out for service.
    H. J. JEFFRIES TRUCK LINE: H. J. “Jeff” Jeffries, born in Texas in 1903, came to Oklahoma City in 1931. He founded H. J. Jeffries Truck Line with one truck, hauling cotton and sugar. Soon he was hauling Caterpillar construction equipment and oilfield equipment. In 1935 he was ‘grandfathered’ in under the ICC Motor Carrier Act, and was incorporated in 1952. As they grew, H J Jeffries operated in all 48 states, Western Canada, and Alaska. I recall them as one of the ‘premier’ specialized haulers of their day. The company was sold in December 1983. Mr. Jeffries died in January 1985.
CEDARAPIDS MANUFACTURING CO.: Founded as Iowa Manufacturing Co. in 1923 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Cedarapids made a full line of rock crushing and asphalt paving equipment. With about 900 employees in 1999, it was one of the largest employers in the city. Terex Corporation acquired Cedarapids in 1999, renaming it Terex-Cedarapids, and then Terex Minerals Processing Systems in 2009. As sales fell drastically, Terex announced in March 2014 to close the Cedarapids manufacturing operations, eliminating some 170 remaining jobs. Engineering, Sales & Service remained in Cedar Rapids.
