DESCRIPTION:
What a classic logging photo from the early 1900s, as 2 Steam Tractors hooked in tandem are pulling 4 loaded log wagons. The lead engine is a BEST 110-hp Steamer, very similar to one pictured in a Caterpillar historical book, said to be hauling 2 wagons of logs for the McCloud River Lumber Company of northern California in 1894. The second steam tractor looks to be a HOLT No. 77 engine, introduced in 1903. Note the detail: corduroy wooden road, the totally different style of the two steam tractors, the solid wooden wheels on the log wagons, and the loggers proudly posed for this photo. Imagine the effort it took to get these large logs to the mill back in those days!
HOLT BROTHERS: 4 brothers from New England, Charles, William, Frank, & Benjamin, adopted the name Holt Brothers. They first built a factory in New Hampshire, then in 1883 they established the Stockton Wheel Company in California. The Holts began experimenting with a grain combine in the mid-1880s. Holt solved the problem of replacing cast iron gears to transmit power from ground wheel to the combine’s working parts by using chain belts. Holt’s first experimental steam traction engine was built in 1890 for use in farming. But freighting quickly became a major market for traction engines - especially for transporting lumber, ores and supplies where roads were marginal. In 1906 Holt introduced the first production steam-powered crawler. In 1909 Holt bought the East Peoria factory of a bankrupt steam traction manufacturer. In 1913 Holt Caterpillar Co. in Illinois, was consolidated with the Stockton plant of Holt Manufacturing Co. Benjamin Holt was among the first to see that track type tractors had an application beyond farming and freighting, proving themselves on the Los Angeles Aqueduct. The Holt company eventually merged with Best in 1925 to form the Caterpillar Tractor Co.
DANIEL BEST: Daniel Best left the family farm in Iowa in 1959 to seek gold in the west. While working on his brothers California ranch, Daniel saw a need to clean grain in the field, and in 1871 patented his first Best Grain Cleaner. In 1886 he bought a factory in San Leandro, CA. While not inventing the combine, Daniel built his first Best Combine incorporating his popular grain cleaners. In 1889 Daniel Best brought out his first steam traction engine, selling more than 25 in the first two years. At age 70, Daniel Best sold out to Holt in 1908. Daniel’s son, C. L. Best then established the C. L. Best Gas Traction Co. in 1910, and began experimenting with a track type tractor. By 1925 the Best Tractor Co. merged with Holt. Best’s plant became the first head quarters of Caterpillar Tractor Co, with C. L. Best as the first chairman of the new company.
