    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white  newly reproduced photo of a ca. 1950 DC AUTOCAR Road Tractor pulling a set of Double Tankers for E. Brooke Matlack, Inc..
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION:  With a rich long history of hauling petroleum products, E. Brooke Matlack was a huge name on the east coast into the midwest as illustrated with this classic DC AUTOCAR pulling a set of doubles. The year of this photo is not known, but from the late 1940s automobile parked in the background, I’d judge it to be from around 1950. Powered with a traditional CUMMINS Diesel engine, this big Autocar had to be one of the “Kings of the Road” in its day. Remember, this was pre-Interstate Highway days when the bulk of road tractors were still mostly gasoline powere
    E. BROOKE MATLACK, Inc./MATLACK, Inc. of Wilmington, DE: Established in 1888 not as a tank line, but hauling furniture and baggage by horse and wagon in Pennsylvania. Over the next 40 years Matlack hauled about everything in a fleet of vans and dump trucks. By 1930 tank trucks were hauling petroleum products from Philadelphia … petro chemicals, food, water, cement, forest products, hazardous waste and building materials. John Rollins of Rollins Leasing Corp. acquired E. Brooke Matlack in 1968. Primarily an east coast carrier, a west coast operation was added in 1979, along with a southeast operation in 1981. By 1991 Matlack was a coast to coast carrier, and was the 31st largest trucking company in the nation. Operating 1300 tractors (mostly CH Macks) and nearly 4000 trailers from 100 terminals, Matlack became America’s #1 bulk carrier trucking company. But with losses continuing, Matlack abruptly closed their doors in September 2001 … another of America’s great carriers gone from the highways but not from our memories.
