    Description

This photo is a quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of a 1966-1967 FORD Model WT-1000-D Tandem-Axle Tractor & Canvas Covered Open-Top Semi-Trailer operated by COOPER-JARRETT MOTOR FREIGHT LINES.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: In 1966 FORD’s new W-Series of Linehaulers replaced the H-Series high tilt cab. The W-Series had engines from 195 to 335-hp available from Cummins, Detroit Diesel, & Caterpillar. This particular photo is not in real sharp focus, and along with the notations on the back of my original photo, makes me think that it may have been a photo taken by the late Joe Wanchura, who photographed many working trucks during his own driving years. This photo has a white border around all 4-sides.
HISTORY OF COOPER-JARRETT MOTOR FREIGT LINES, INC.: Bob Cooper was not interested in the family insurance business in Kansas City, so established his trucking firm with a single truck in 1930, hauling meat to New York City and fish on the return trip, making frequent stops for ice to keep his cargo fresh. By 1965 the company was the 36th largest U. S. motor carrier with revenues of million. Originally the company was set up primarily as a truck load carrier using a 2-man sleeper operation, but in the mid 1950s changed to a relay system, where drivers would drive 4 hours to a mutual point, meet another driver going the opposite way, exchange equipment, and drive back to their point of origin. I recall one such relay yard on US-6 east of Bowling Green, OH. Known as ‘the route of the relays’ C-J’s relay system made it one of the most successful U. S. trucking companies for many years. The Cooper-Jarrett fleet wore a distinctive orange & black color scheme. Over 500 tractors and 1800 trailers moved dry freight, explosives, perishables, and household goods. Growing through acquisition, as was common to most motor carriers, C-J revenues climbed to million in 1978. But by 1978 C-J was in dire financial straits, and was sold. An attempt to cut back the operation did not work, and the company filed bankruptcy in December 1981 and shut down all operations. Another motor carrier from the “Golden Years of Trucking” was gone from the highways, but lives on in our memories.
