DESCRIPTION: This photo was taken by me at the 2000 HCEA National Convention held in Seward, NE during September 2000. This 1945 CATERPILLAR D8 8R Series Crawler and its 1942 LeTOURNEAU LP Carryall Scraper were owned by Hartman Construction Co. During the working show convention, this combination Caterpillar-LeTourneau along with 4 other scrapers of various sizes worked the ‘project’ moving 5,000 CY of earth to build an earthfill dam on the grounds of a Seminary adjacent to the Convention site This photo is very clear and sharp, full of detail. Photo #1 of 2.
CATERPILLAR D8: The world famous Caterpillar D8 began its history as the Diesel 75. In 1935 the RD8 was introduced. By 1937 the “R” prefix was dropped and the D8 debuted, still to be produced today. In the 1941 the 8R Series began production, powered with the Caterpillar D13000 diesel engine that produced 113-drawbar horsepower and 131 belt horsepower. Later in the 1940s the 8R was replaced by the more powerful 2U series, and was continuously upgraded every few years to the huge elevated sprocket D8’s of today. My memories are of the Caterpillar D8 are of the D8H of 225-270 horsepower that was produced from 1958 until replaced by the D8K in 1982.
