DESCRIPTION: Of all places, I found my original linen-backed photo in an antique store in Hawaii! The coal truck in the foreground carries a sign on the dump bed: J. J. WALLACE COAL CO. The rest of the sign is unreadable. With research, I found information on an E. J. Wallace Coal Co. in St. Louis, MO. The original photo was taken by a commercial photographer from Chicago., stamped on the back: “Paul J. Garvey, Commercial Photographer, 7930 Bennett Ave., Chicago, Phone South Shore 719”, but is not dated.
STERLING COAL TRUCK: The coal truck in the background is a STERLING, identified by the famous “S” script on the side of the radiator, the shape of the radiator top tank, the heavy radiator guard with the distinctive Sterling side support arms, the curved front frame rails, the front axle spring hangers, the open C-Cab, the vertical cooling louvres on the side of the hinged hood panels and the distinctive 45º flare on the bottom front of the cab door. First known at STERNBERG from 1909 to 1913, the company name was changed to STERLING MOTOR TRUCK CO. because of anti-German feelings that led up to WWI. Made in Milwaukee, most early Sterlings were chain-drive and powered by 4-cylinder Waukesha gasoline engines. This style Sterling was produced from the late ‘teens to about 1926, although the lack of electric headlights leads me to believe the truck was produced in the late ‘teens’. The truck has an engine hand crank, gas headlights mounted on the cowl, a gas lamp to the top rear of the cab, hard rubber tires mounted on wooden spoke wheels, and 1/4-round detached bicycle-style front fenders. The truck has a flared-side steel dump body, popular with cold supplies at that time.
TRAFFIC TRUCK: The coal truck on the right foreground appears to be a TRAFFIC truck, identified by the unusual pre-1925 curved front frame member which doubled as the front bumper. The TRAFFIC radiator extends above the hood with its distinctive shaped cast top tank with cooling fins, and an enclosed wooden frame cab with its distinctive sloping front cab roof. Made by the TRAFFIC MOTOR TRUCK CORP., in St. Louis from 1912 to 1928. Most early Traffics were powered by Continental Red Seal 4-cylinder gasoline engines, had Covert 3-speed transmissions, and shaft-driven Russel Internal Gear Drive rear axles. This truck also has no electric headlights, but was equipped with gas headlights on the side of the cowl, hard rubber tires mounted on wooden spoke wheels, and 1/4-round detached bicycle-style fenders. I believe the truck to be around a 1920 model. In this photo, the Traffic truck is loaded with bagged coal. A canvas tarp is thrown over the engine compartment, along with enclosed side windows, indicating this photo was taken in colder weather.
