Description
Presented is a wonderful American sterling silver water pitcher, dating to the first quarter of the 1900s. The pitcher was retailed and possibly made by Marcus & Co of New York. The pitcher is done in a lovely classical lobed form, fabulously hand chased around the upper portion of the body. The chasing is done in intricate designs of scrollwork, floral garlands and hanging swags, and stylized shells, all very detailed and well done. This piece is in excellent condition. There are no splits, no leaks, no dents, no cracks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The underside of the piece is stamped 'sterling' and with the mark for Marcus & Co of New York, possibly the maker but likely just the retailer. There is also the number 88 and the capacity, 4 pints (64 fluid ounces/1.89 liters).
The pitcher stands about 9 1/8 inches tall.
This piece weighs 810 grams or 28.6 regular ounces.
