DESCRIPTION:  This Autocar factory photo is of AUTOCAR S/N: 47136: Model DC9764 with a Cummins 180-hp diesel engine, and 4x4 transmissions.  Owned by C. F. REPLOGLE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY of Circleville, Ohio. This Autocar Dumpcrete was photographed on a construction haul road, hauling 7-cy of mixed concrete from the central-mix concrete plant to the paving spread.
REPLOGLE HISTORY:  C. F. Replogle, known as “Rep”, was a very large and prominent heavy/highway contractor during the early Interstate Highway days.  They built many miles of Interstates in Ohio in the 1950s. Always an innovator, Replogle was an early user of central-mixed concrete on concrete highway construction projects. The Maxon Dumpcrete mounted on this Autocar was only 7-cy, using a non-agitated hydraulic dump body. Once at the paving spreader, the Dumpcrete would be hydraulically raised, with the concrete discharged between the paving forms through the chute carried on the back. In addition to creating new methods of concrete paving, Replogle also was an innovator in earth moving. While most of their work was in Ohio, they took several large highway contracts in Michigan around 1960. Replogle eventually went bankrupt, and had a very big equipment auction in 1962, if I remember the date correctly.
MAXON DUMPCRETES: While working for T. L. Smith Co. in Milwaukee in the 1930s, Glen Maxon, Jr. developed a method of mixing concrete at a centrally located plant on construction projects, and hauling the wet concrete to the concrete buckets or paving spreads. First introduced in the 1940s, the first Maxon Dumpcretes were open top non-agitating bodies, only 4-cy in capacity. The rear dumping Dumpcretes grew in size to 8-cy and larger, and eventually added hydraulically driven paddles to agitate the concrete while in transit, keeping the mix more uniform. Maxon also invented the side-dump carrier and the side dump Maxon Spreader used on many high production mainline concrete paving projects. New Maxon designs and innovations continue, and Maxon Industries continues today to be a leader in concrete transportation.
