    Description

Three superb John Sargeant Company original prints of photographs showing an African American couple working in the cotton fields, probably in Columbia, South Carolina.
Each glossy print measures 4.5” x 2.75”, and they’re in excellent vintage condition (see photos).
The back of each photo bears the company stamp and the number 42.
Sargeant became an assistant in Walter Blanchard’s photo studio in Columbia in 1915, and he served as Camp Jackson’s camp photographer during WWI.
After the war, he opened his own studio on Main Street in Columbia.
He was subsequently joined by photographer Charles Old.
The two took all kinds of photos of people, places, and events in Columbia and the surrounding area.
Note: I can’t say for certain that these photographs were taken by Sargeant himself.
They could just as easily be the work of Walter Blanchard. In fact, Blanchard is a more likely candidate because he frequently photographed ex-slaves and African American agricultural workers.
Regardless of who the photographer was, they were processed in Sargeant’s studio and are a piece of African American history.
