    Description

EXQUISITE ANTIQUE JAPANESE LACQUERED SAKE DISH
Late Edo - Early Meiji Period, 1800s
Exceptionally fine, hand lacquered sakazuke representing the high elegance of the Japanese aesthetic during the age of the Shogun and Samurai. The fine quality of this footed bowl would have been reserved for only the wealthiest families and imperial class. Featuring absolutely stunning hand applied golden raised maki-e lacquer detail. Ornate and magnificent design featuring a golden tea house at the edge of a tranquil garden pond, rendered in sublime shades of golden lacquer in high relief.
The artisan who created this superb dish was a master craftsman who utilized many techniques including, maki-e (gold sprinkled) and takamakie (raised design), and minute pieces of inlaid mother of pearl, all upon a smooth red lacquer ground. The bowl is elegantly raised upon a small raised foot adding tasteful style to the form.  The quality and fine detail are nothing short of spectacular
