Antique Ogata Kenzan Style Japanese Hand-Crafted Signed Pottery with Beautiful Floral DesignMy late stepfather said this Japanese vase was always in his parent’s house when he was growing up in the early 1900s. He believed that this was a wedding gift to his parents. I searched for information about the piece and received this information about the piece from Yuki Yamaguchi, the Moderator/Administrator of the Oriental Porcelain and Antiques Marks Identification website: “
This is Ogata Kenzan-style Kyoto ware. Mark on the bottom is
乾山
Kenzan as a tribute to Ogata Kenzan
尾形乾山
. Age-wise, early 20th century
.”
Other Kyoto pottery workshops
produced ware that perpetuated the styles that
Ogata Kenzan (
1663–1743)
invented. This antique vase,
handmade in the early 1900s
with high-quality craftsmanship, is an excellent example of the
Kenzan style. It has a brightly colored floral design (blue, yellow, and white) on two sides with boldly brushed stylized brown motifs on the other two sides. There is creamy white around the bottom of the pot with a series of bold brown squiggle shapes. The top rim has brown swirls bordered by blue lines. The pottery’s shape and artistic design are extremely well balanced. This ascetically pleasing 100-year-old vase has been well-loved, had excellent care, and is in outstanding condition – no chips or cracks. The piece was made from high-quality clay that contributes to it durability and fine texture. The glaze has crazing typical of 100-year-old pottery. This is a very collectable piece of Kenzan style pottery.
