Antique Japanese Awaji Ware Minpei-yaki White Relief Ceramic Dish Edo Period

Description

This antique Japanese Awaji Ware Minpei-yaki ceramic dish is a rare find from the late Edo Period circa 1860’s. The dish features a beautiful white molded relief decoration under glaze in an octagon shape. The energetic dragon is in the center as the edges are delicately decorated with various floral branches. Great antique condition except there is a very tiny flea bit on the bottom foot ( see last picture). There are some natural ocher dots in the center of the dish which were formed by firing. Otherwise, no chips, cracks or crazing. Please see the pictures as they are part of my description.
It measures approximately 6 3/4” x 5 5/8” x 1 1/2”.

Awaji ware (
淡路焼
, Awaji-yaki), also known as Minpei (
珉平燒）
or Mimpei ware, is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally made on Awaji Island in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea, western Japan.
Awaji ware was founded in the early 1830s by Minpei Kashu (1796–1871) ( last name also spelled Mimpei) from Iga village. Coming from a wealthy trading family, he was a scholar of classical literature and skillful in the art of chanoyu.
He had studied under Ogata Shuhei (1788-1839), a famous Kyoto potter. He established kilns in the fifth year of Tenpō (1835/1836). His efforts were successful.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has nine pieces of Minpei ware in its permanent collection.

- For international shipping, I use eBay international standard delivery. USPS priority Mail. Please note that eBay international standard delivery takes about 10-30 business days. Packages sometimes can be delayed by foreign custom. Your patience is appreciated. Buyers are responsible for any import or custom taxes or fees.
Return terms:
- Serious buyers only. Return will only be accepted if an item has been inadvertently misrepresented. Buyer must notify me within 24 hours of receipt. Returns must be returned in the same condition as received and by the same method as when originally shipped.
