    Description

Offered is an Antique ~ Collectible ~ Late 1860's ~ GNRy Great Northern Ry ~ Silver Dining Car Service Bowl.  It measures 6-7/8" dia. X 2-2/4" tall.  Front stamped: GN in script 1" insignia.  Stamped on bottom:  GREAT NORTHERN R.Y. ~ 1847 ~ ROGERS BROS ~ Meriden ~ Silver soldered ~ Nickel Silver ~ SX0645 ~ SILVER SOLDERED.  Weighs 9.7 ounces or 276 grams.  Old & Rare.  The Rogers Brothers helped start the Silver Electro-Plating process in 1847 in Hartford, and were helped in 1852 by the Meridan Britannia Co. financially to be successful.  From 1862 to 1867, The Meridan Britannia Co. & Rogers Bros were fully merged into The Meridan Britannia Co.  This bowl was probably made around the year 1866 "earliest" into 1870's is my guess.  The plant began in Meridan in 1866 and by 1869-1877 The Meridan Britannia Co. had also fully incorporated - merged Rogers Smith & Co. into Meridan Britannia as well.  This bowl could also be of the 1870's just as it's possible with late 1860's; nevertheless, it's probably a 3 quarter 1800's piece.  A nice rare bowl of good size with bead work top and bottom.  Shows wear from age & use, inside surface does have medium to some spots of heavy wear from use.  Item ships worldwide & cost depends on your location.  Thank you for looking!
