Description
This photo is an outstanding black & white 8” x 10” newly reproduced glossy photo of a ca. 1955 MACK Model H-63T Single-Axle Sleeper Tractor pulling a 35’ Semi-Trailer owned and operated by AKERS MOTOR LINES, INC. of Charlotte, NC.”SAMPLE” will not appear on the actual photo, but is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: The H-63T was produced from 1954 to 1958. In this 5 year span, almost 4,100 H-63 Models were built. The original H-60/H-61 was introduced in 1953 with choice of gasoline or diesel 170-hp engines. The H-60/H-61 had very high cabs, and were often referred to as “Cherry Pickers”. The main feature of the H Models was their short BBC length, which allowed them to pull 35’ trailers in 45’ states. The H-63 design had the cab height lowered by one foot, but was still over 9’ high, and was tilted forward by a hydraulic hand pump for engine access. The semi-trailer in this photo is only 12’4” high, the ‘norm’ for that era. The H-67 replaced the H-63 in 1957, and over 6,500 were built until replaced with the F Series in 1962. Some 12,200+ H Models were produced in various configurations between 1952 and 1966. This photo is borderless.
AKERS HISTORY: Akers Motor Lines, based in Charlotte, NC was once one of the largest carriers on the Atlantic Seaboard, with service from Georgia to Boston. Founded in 1913 by W. W. Akers, Akers Motor Lines grew rapidly, survived the Great Depression, and by 1960 had built one of the most modern and efficient terminal & headquarters buildings of the times. Akers ran mostly Macks and GMCs, with a few Autocars and Whites .. always clean and well maintained. By 1971 the company had 2,000 employees and nearly that many pieces of equipment. In December 1971, Akers was bought by Pepsico and combined with Central Motor Lines. A failing economy hit Akers hard in 1974-75 and by 1977 they had closed their doors. Another grand trucking ‘pioneer’ from the “Golden Age of Trucking” whose thousands of loyal and capable employees had nourished the company for over 60 years, is now just memories.
