Description
This photo is a quality 8” x 10” full color glossy new photo reproduction of a 1975+ MACK WESTERN WL/WS Series Tandem-Axle Tractor pulling a Triaxle HYSTER Lowboy Semi-Trailer owned by RELIANCE.”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This MACK WS/WLTandem-Axle Tractor was owned by RELIANCE, with the name readable on the door in a diamond-shaped sign with a bold “R” in the center, company number “R-3”. The HYSTER detachable gooseneck drop-deck triaxle lowboy trailer looks well used, and starting to rust slightly. I can only guess that this unit was used in the west states.
If any of you might recognize the Reliance logo, please let me know.
My original photo was reproduced from an original color slide, that was printed onto 8x10 professional photo paper using the ‘Silver Gelatin’ method at the only remaining professional film developing shop in my area.
MACK WL/WS SERIES: The all new Western cab-over-engine series named the CRUISE-LINER, was introduced in the fall of 1974. The push for higher horsepower, lead to a new generation of commercial vehicles, with much larger radiators needed needed for the new super power plants. Introduced for the western market, these units were built in the Hayward, CA Plant. The cab-over-engine ‘CRUISE-LINER’ was also designated as the W Series. Frames on both the WL and WS had a special drop-frame section to accommodate the larger radiators required for 400 to 500 horsepower engines. Power ratings for the standard Maxidyne and optional Cummins, Detroit Diesel, and Caterpillar engines ranged from 237 to 440 horsepower. Lightweight components, and driver comforts were the essence of the Cruise-Liners cab. The sturdy but lightweight cab tilted a full 90º for engine servicing. Outstanding visibility was provided by a large windshield. Western WL/WS production life and units sold are not known.
