DESCRIPTION: This INTERNATIONAL DF-400 ROADWAY Tandem-Axle Tractor from the mid-1960s is pulling a tandem-axle freight trailer, after most states lifted their restrictive overall length laws from the 1950s. In 1966 International converted to block letters on the side of the hoods, as shown on this tractor. The DF-400 Series was offered in two hood lengths, the short and the longer conventional as shown in this photo.
INTERNATIONAL-HARVESTER DCO & DF SERIES: The popular DCO-400 was introduced in 1956 as a cab-over-engine model, becoming the best and biggest selling highway tractor in the nation. Offered as a conventional tractor, the DF-400 Series was offered with two standard engines, the Cummins NHE-195 and the Detroit Diesel 6V-71-218, with transmissions from 4 to 16 speeds, and a GVW of 79,000 pounds. Later, engines were offered from 210 to 335 horsepower, and with more aluminum components.
HISTORY OF ROADWAY EXPRESS, INC., Akron, Ohio: Late in 1930, the Roush brothers and John Morrison, who had been in business for a year as R & M Transportation, incorporated as ROADWAY EXPRESS, INC., putting 30 trucks into service displaying the company’s distinctive orange and blue colors. In the beginning, all drivers were owner-operators providing their own equipment, making expansion possible when capital was limited. Roadway continued to expand with new terminals and more destinations. When the I.C.C. was established in 1935, Roadway claimed the greatest number of ‘grandfather rights’ and continued to grow through acquisition. The first management training program in the industry in 1947, grew a reserve of talent. By the mid-1950s Roadway converted from owner-operators to company drivers and owned equipment. The acquisition of Western Gillette made Roadway a transcontinental carrier in the late 1970s. The break bulk-relay and satellite terminal system was pioneered by Roadway, producing excellent service. By the time Galen Roush retired in 1974, Roadway was the leading carrier in the nation. Deregulation in 1980 dampened Roadway’s 50th anniversary, and although with difficulty they continued to expand into all 50 states by 1985, and into Canada and Mexico by 1990. In 1982, a holding company, Roadway Services, was formed to take advantage of a regional carrier system, acquiring 4 non-union carriers: Spartan, Viking, Central, & Coles. Later Roberts Express, a time-sensitive carrier was acquired, and in 1985 Roadway Package System went into operation, taking on UPS. Tires made in Akron had made Roadway in the beginning, and while the tires are mostly gone from Akron, Roadway remained as one of Akron’s largest employers as of 1995. In 2003, Roadway came together with Yellow Transit under the banner of Yellow Roadway Corp. By 2012 the combined companies had become YRC Freight.
