Description
This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy vertical new photo reproduction of a SPECTOR FREIGHT SYSTEM’s 1962 WHITE DIESEL 9064TD Tandem-Axle Road Tractor pulling a FRUEHAUF Semi-Trailer.”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This SPECTOR WHITE 9064TD Diesel Tractor has White’s larger “Custom Cab” which was said to be designed around the driver. While the 9000TD looked to be the same from 1959 to 1962, the White in this photo is carrying a 1962 license plate. It may also have been a “Turnpike Double” as it appears to have a second trailer behind it, likely to be powered with a Cummins NH250, the largest engine available at that time. This photo is a vertical photo, and has a white border around all 4 sides.
WHITE 9000TD: was a short nosed 90” BBC, light-weight chassis. Available engines were Cummins NHE 180, NH 195, NH 220, and NH 250 ranging from 180 to 250 horsepower, most fitted with Roadranger 10-speeds. With its 90” BBC it could pull a 40’ semi-trailer in 50’ states. The 9000TD had a large doghouse back into the cab, cramping some drivers. Fitting the engine and attendant hardware into the small hood area made it a model hard to work on.
HISTORY OF SPECTOR FREIGHT SYSTEM, INC.: With 0 of borrowed money, Ben Spector established Spector Freight System in 1932. His first revenue load was from St. Louis to New York, a trip that took 12 days! Expansion to the east continued even during the WWII years with acquisition of 3 east coast carriers. Other large carriers that were later acquired included Mid-States, Viking, & Hennis among others. When Spector opened it new Chicago terminal headquarters in 1964, it was considered the most advanced freight terminal in the country, with its ability to handle 137 trailers at one time. In just 30 years Spector grew to become the 6th largest motor carrier with 58 terminals in 17 states and DC. The Chicago Teamster strike of 1976 which lasted 17 weeks, severely crippled the company. Spector was sold that same year to the same holding company that operated Red Ball Motor Freight of Dallas. The companies were finally merged in 1980, making problems that soon became insurmountable. Continuing financial problems until April 1982 when Spector-Red Ball closed its doors and filed bankruptcy. After 50 years, this once proud carrier would join the ranks of the fallen trucking pioneers, leaving their thousands of employees and their families with nothing but memories. Another company from the “Golden Years of Trucking” gone, all but for the memories.
