DESCRIPTION: This powerful WHITE 9000 Triaxle Dump is crawling out of a snow covered Pennsylvania coal pit, with just the tip of a dragline in the upper right corner. My original vintage photo was taken by professional photographer SCOPE•FOTO ARTS of Cleveland, Ohio … most likely a promotional photo for The White Motor Company. Mounted on this hefty White is a large CITY aluminum dump body … one of the best in its day. The White was owned by W. E. BOLLINGER.
WHITE 9000:  The second generation of  the White 9000 Series was introduced in 1966, with a redesigned version of the “Custom Cab” offering both a tilting hood or the traditional ‘butterfly’ hood as in this photo, along with a newly designed grill that covered the radiator shutters. The ‘new’ 9000 had improved steering geometry, stronger frame rails, tubular cross members in the frame, a ‘wide track’ front axle for greater stability, air cleaners on the right side with oil filters on the left, and a windshield 11% larger than the 1955 version 9000. Power options included gasoline engines from 186 to 250 hp, Cummins diesels from 160 to 335 hp, and Detroit Diesel engines from 195 to 318 hp.
WHITE MOTOR CO.: The White Motor Co. of Cleveland was in business from 1900 to 1981, with earlier roots in sewing machines and steam cars. White offered a broad array of light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks before concentrating on the heavy-duty models from the 1960s on. In the 1950s White acquired truck builders Sterling, Autocar, Reo and Diamond T, and marketed Freightliners. But sales were declining in the 1960s and by 1980 White was insolvent. Volvo AB acquired the assets of the company, combined them with the GMC heavy truck business in 1987.  Eventually Volvo dropped any reference to White and is now Volvo Trucks North America.
