Description
This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy photo new reproduction of a NELLO TEER COMPANY AUTOCAR DC9564T tandem-axle tractor pulling a tandem-axle Lowboy trailer loaded with a NORTHWEST boom crane, most likely a Model 6.”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This is #3 of 3 photos I have of Nello Teer's Autocar tractors & lowboys loaded with construction equipment. I believe this DC9564T AUTOCAR is a 1956 model, powered with a 320-HP Diesel Engine. The NORTHWEST crane looks to be a Model 6 rated at 1-1/2 CY. It could have been a dragline, or perhaps used for clamshell work since it has a tagline mounted on the lower section of the boom and appears to be in a limestone quarry. In the background is a Nello Teer 1956 International pickup truck.
HISTORY OF NELLO L. TEER COMPANY: Headquartered in Durham, NC, the company was founded in 1909 by Nello L. Teer, Sr. as a sole proprietorship. Beginning with hand labor and mules pulling the equipment, the company grew to be one of the largest heavy construction companies in the world until it was sold in 1980.
By 1935 Nello L. Teer, Jr. joined the company, the same year that they were awarded the first contract on the Blue Ridge Parkway, on their way to build 17 sections. Dillard Teer joined the company in 1938, and by 1940 the company was working on large defense projects. Incorporated in 1946, they built their first international job in Cuba. In 1950 they launched their Quarry Division, followed by international work in Morocco and Guatemala. The Building Division was formed in 1965, a real estate development division in 1969, followed by the Heavy & Industrial Division in 1972, and the Webster County Coal Company in 1974. Other foreign work was performed in Qatar, Israel, Tanzania, Malawi, Iceland, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. By 1980 the Teer Company employed 5,000 in many divisions, and owned over 5,000 pieces of yellow iron located in North America, Central America, Africa, and the Middle East. They performed both asphalt and concrete paving, had a dredging division, and bought the Durham-Southern Railway. Major construction projects were completed up and down the East Coast from Maine to Florida, as well as several joint-ventures with other national contractors on very large projects. In 1980 when Dillard Teer retired, the company was sold to Koppers Company of Pittsburgh. Today the aggregate portion of the business is part of the Lehigh Hanson - Heidelberg Cement of North America, the rail assets are part of CSX, the road construction aspects are held by the Colas Group, and some of the real estate is managed by Teer Associates.
