    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality, sharp & clear 8” x 10” black & white glossy photo new reproduction of an early to mid-1950s PETERBILT MODEL 350 owned by PETERSON TRACTOR & EQUIPMENT CO. of the SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA of CALIFORNIA, pulling a DROP DECK LOWBOY Loaded with a CATERPILLAR D-9 with Front Mounted CCU and Rear Mounted RIPPER.  While the original photo is not dated, it most likely was taken in 1955 when the D-9 19A Series was introduced.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
PETERBILT MODEL 350: This Peterbilt is a Model 350, produced from 1949 to 1957, with a total of 847 units, peaking in 1952 and 1953. The Model 350 was produced with optional engines: diesel, butane, or gasoline. The Peterbilt Model 350 was one of the few models built in both conventional and cab-over versions. The 350 conventional still used the skirted fenders that Peterbilt had introduced in 1939 and used through 1953, except for special orders. This photo has a 1/4” white border on all four sides.
NOTE: I had earlier incorrectly identified this photo as a Model 360 Peterbilt, until I found an illustration of this very same Peterbilt in the book: ‘The Evolution of Class’. I’m sorry for misleading the purchasers of this photo, before I was able to correct it on 6/25/14.
CATERPILLAR D-9: Introduced in May 1955, the CAT D-9 was the largest crawler tractor in the world at that time. The 19A Series D-9 weighed around 60,000 lbs. plus attachments and put out 260-fwhp.
PETERSON TRACTOR & EQUIPMENT CO.: Now known simply as Peterson CAT is the CATERPILLAR Distributor from Santa Cruz County in the south to Pacific County, Washington in the north. Peterson got their start during the post-depression era of the mid-1930s, incorporating in 1936 as the CAT Dealership in the 5 county bay area of northern California. Headquartered in San Leandro since 1948, Peterson’s service territory now covers more than 100,000 square miles with the acquisition of other Cat dealerships. Known for their revolutionary oversize redesign of standard Cat machines, Peterson developed the Twin D8 (built side by side on one frame) in 1954 as a stopgap for higher horsepower requirements until the D9 came out in 1955; the Quad D9 in the 1964, which Cat bought the patent and produced their own version from 1968-1980; the Triple 657 - a monster 6-engine, 6-axle, 186’ long machine with 2850-hp and a 150-cy capacity; among other models designed and modified by Peterson. Peterson has been 70+ years in business and still growing.
