    Description

This photo is an excellent black & white 8” x 10” newly reproduced photo of a 1953 WHITE-FREIGHTLINER WF-64T  Model 800 “Bubblenose” owned by ST. JOHNS MOTOR EXPRESS pulling a Tri-Axle Lowboy loaded with a PLYMOUTH Industrial Locomotive.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This same vintage photo appears in the Freightliner Trucks 1937-1981 Photo Archive series by Iconographic, identified as a White-Freightliner WF-64T Model 800 “Bubblenose” using the Freightliner aluminum ‘full visibility’ cab. Overall length of the tractor with its box sleeper was 28’. With 10.00x22 tires, Budd wheels, Cummins NHB-600 200-hp engine, Fuller 4-B-86 transmission, Timken SW456 worm gears, heat treated alloy steel fame channels with aluminum cross members, and 100-gallon fuel tank, this tractor weighed 14,000 lbs., some 1,300 lbs. less than the competition of the day. My original vintage photo has 1953 written on the back side. Loaded on the unusual looking tri-axle lowboy is a PLYMOUTH 40 Ton Industrial Locomotive.
ST. JOHNS MOTOR EXPRESS: Advertising itself as “Western Heavy Hauling”, St. Johns was headquartered in Portland, OR, with terminals in Washington state. ‘St. Johns’ is a neighborhood of Portland, OR, located in North Portland on the tip of the peninsula formed by the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. The company installed industrial machinery, in addition to their hauling business. A friendly eBayer emailed me information that his father was a diesel mechanic for St. Johns in their Tacoma shop, then moved to Des Moines, WA after St. Johns sold out to Widing Transportation of Portland, OR in 1969, and continued to operate as a division. Widing Transportation had sales in the 1970s of 0+ million, but I believe are now out of business themselves.
PLYMOUTH LOCOMOTIVE WORKS: was a prolific builder of small railroad locomotives built in Plymouth, OH from 1910 until 1997 when the company was purchased by Ohio Locomotive Crane and moved production to Bucyrus, OH in 1999, although production has now ceased. Over 7,500 locomotives were built, with 1,700 believed to still be in active use, some over 50 years old.
WHITE-FREIGHTLINER HISTORY: To meet the special needs of Consolidated Freightways, about 20 experimental trucks were built between 1937 and 1939 by the CF mechanics in the Portland shops.  These were often called “Monkey Ward” Freightliners because to some they looked like they were made from mail order parts.  Production of the first trucks by Freightways Manufacturing began in August 1940 in their Salt Lake City shops.  In 1942 they took on the name of the Freightliner Corporation.  The early Freightliners were nicknamed “Shovelnose” COE’s because of the distinctive shape of their blunt hood.  Truck production stopped in 1944 during WWII, and the Freightliner shops were moved to Portland, with a new plant opening in 1947.  Freightliner signed an exclusive sales agreement with White Motors in 1951 that continued to the end of 1977, when Freightliner again became an independent company.  As White-Freightliner, White sold and serviced the trucks, while Freightliner concentrated on building the units.
