DESCRIPTION: This long-wheelbase Sterling is a diesel powered dual worm gear drive designed for West Coast service. While most severe duty Sterling diesels were powered with the 200-hp Cummins NHB600, this Sterling had Waukesha Diesel power.  A  popular sales feature was the rugged Sterling frame, with oak timber pressed into the frame rails. Shown here at work in the Long Beach or Signal Hill Oil Fields, posed in front of several steel framed oil derricks.
LONG BEACH OIL FIELD: is a large oil field under the cities of Long Beach and Signal Hill, CA. Discovered in 1921, the field was enormously productive in the 1920s. Signal Hill became known as “Porcupine Hill” for its appearance of hundreds of wooden oil derricks. By 1923 the production from the field had become so abundant the oil from the Los Angeles Basin accounted for fully 20% of the entire world output. 1923 was the peak year for the field. With huge new oil fields in Oklahoma and Texas putting a glut of petroleum on the market, production began to decline. While the field is now largely depleted, the field still retains around 5 million barrels of recoverable oil of its original 950 million. 294 wells remained in operation as of 2008. The field is currently run entirely by small independent oil companies.
STERLING MOTORS produced heavy duty trucks in Milwaukee from 1916-1952. Know primarily for staying with chain driven trucks much longer than any other producer,  this particular truck has a 6x4 dual worm gear enclosed final drive. While highway Sterlings were popular on the west coast, most Sterlings in the later years were custom built for off-highway severe-service use. Sterling was purchased by The White Motor Company in 1951, and rebadged as Sterling-Whites. Milwaukee production moved to Cleveland in 1953. With White’s acquisition of Autocar in 1953, and with Sterling-White only producing 250 trucks in 1952, White terminated Sterling-White production in 1953.
CRAIL TRANSPORTATION CO.: Little is known of this company, other than they did oil field hauling in the Long Beach Oil Field in the 1940s and 1950s.
