    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of late 1946-1953 FEDERAL Model 45M Tractor pulling a tandem-axle open-top trailer, owned by CALHOUN BROTHERS.
A 'Bonus' will be included: a photocopy of an artist's rendering of the 8-1/2 acre FEDERAL Truck Factory in 1935, with information on their Silver Anniversary.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: I believe this Federal to be very similar to a 1951 Model 45M, rated at 3-1/2 to 5 ton, that I restored in the late 1980s. It could also be the heavier Model 55M or 60M. My truck appeared identical to the Federal in this photo, except for the western style ‘semaphore’-style turn signals hanging from the top rear corner of the cab. My Federal was equipped with a Continental Motors L-Head 427 cid 133-hp 6-cylinder gasoline engine with a 5-speed Clark transmission.
In 1938 Federal had a significant styling change in their cab style, including an all steel cab designed by noted industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss, carrying through to all 29 models in their lineup, from3/4-ton to the 5-ton model. While the front end styling changed after WWII to the massive horizontal grille in this photo, the Dreyfuss all-steel cab style remained unchanged until the introduction of the Style Liner in 1950. Federal’s heavy duty trucks as in this photo, stayed with the bold Dreyfuss look until the 1955 introduction of the Golden Eagle series.
CALHOUN BROS: Little is known of Calhoun Bros, other than this photo appears to be taken in the Southwestern U. S., perhaps in Arizona.

HISTORY OF FEDERAL TRUCKS: Established in 1910 in Detroit, Martin Pulcher led the company in its early years, producing 115 trucks in its first year. By 1929 Federal was producing over 2800 trucks per year. While the Great Depression had a negative effect on Federal, in 1933 they introduced their ‘streamlining’ designs replacing the now outmoded vertical designs. Federal produced over 11,300 military vehicles for WWII. Small scale manufacturers such as Federal lacked the financial resources needed for the increased costs of styling and engineering changes to compete with the larger scale truck manufacturers. In 1950 Federal introduced its
    Style Liner Series
as the ‘most beautiful truck in America’. But poor sales and labor strikes continued to bring the company down. In 1952 Federal merged with parts supplier Fawick Airflex Co. of Cleveland. Loses continued, and in 1954 it was announced that Federal had become part of NAPCO Industries of Minneapolis. The “Golden Eagle” line in 1955 was the first restyling of the heavy duty truck line since 1938. That same year, 1955, all manufacturing was moved to Minneapolis but sales for the entire year only amounted to 56 units. Federal reached the end of the road in 1959. However in a 1970 NAPCO letter it was stated that Federal trucks were being manufactured in Istanbul, Turkey by a wholly owned subsidiary of the Turkish government. For most of its 50 years, Federal was known as an ‘assembled’ truck, manufacturing the cab and frame, but assembling most major components from outside suppliers.
