DESCRIPTION: This contractor-owned heavy-duty MACK MODEL ‘NW’ is shown working in Panama in 1941-1942, loading excavation under a large dragline.
HISTORY OF THE ‘NW’ MACK: Designed specifically for the Third Locks Project of the Panama Canal. Called “Swamp Dumpers”, the NWs featured all-wheel shaft drive, the first heavy-duty Mack trucks that were not chain driven, and powered by Cummins diesel engines. Their dump body was rated at 12-yards. The NW8D chassis had a heavy front bumper with 2 hard-wood inserts, shielded headlamps, an open operators platform with a flat windshield, and measured 12’ wide. A total of 16 NWs were built in 1941. In addition the the NWs, a total of 69 giant FCSW Macks, the largest trucks in the world at that time, rated at 50-ton were built in 1941 at a cost of over million to move 35,000,000 cubic yards of rock and dirt. According to Mack, the FCSWs were returned to the U.S. in January 1944 looking pretty well used.
PANAMA CANAL THIRD LOCKS PROJECT: Not much is known today about this project. To ensure the U. S. fleet of unobstructed passage between the two oceans, in case of emergency, a giant engineering scheme was designed to convert the ‘two-lane’ canal across the Isthmus into a ‘three-lane’ canal. The new locks were to be 1,200 feet long and 135 feet wide to accommodate the biggest men-of-war and ocean liners afloat or contemplated. In 1936 the U. S. government authorized the project with initial funds of 4,000,000 towards the total 7,000,000 cost. The new locks and the dry excavation were to be handled by contractors, and the dredging operations was to be done with the Canal’s own forces. Total excavation was projected at 61,900,000 cubic yards, almost equally divided between dredging and shovel/dragline excavation. Dredging was begun in June 1940, with dry excavation begun in February 1941. In May 1943 the newspapers announced that the dry excavation was almost finished. But because the Panama Canal was an instrument of war, nothing further was written. The Third Locks Project came to a halt when WWII began, as the men and equipment were packed up and shipped to more important missions. I did not find out if the project was later completed.
