DESCRIPTION: This vintage photo from my lifetime collection is an excellent example of a new 1941 FORD 1-1/2 Ton COE City Delivery Truck, owned by Garrett Freightlines, Inc. of Pocatello, ID. Note the canvas covered roof, and the unusual perhaps shop-made semaphore-style turn-signal mounted on the drivers-side front of the freight box.
1941 FORD Model 118-W COE TRUCK: The 1941 Ford COE truck design originated in 1938, rated at 1-1/2 Tons … the largest in the Ford Truck line at that time. With sealed-beam headlights, vacuum-boosted power brakes were also available. Unlike the smaller models, this 1-2/2 Ton COE also had a 2-piece windshield, hinged at the top, which provided additional cooling for the driver. Engines available were the Ford Flathead V-8 rated at 85-hp, with an optional Mercury V-8 gasoline engine rated at 95-hp.
GARRETT FREIGHTLINES, INC.: Advertised as “The Oldest Major Motor Carrier in the U.S.A.”, the company was founded by Clarence and Oscar Garrett in 1913. One of Garrett’s major contributions to the trucking industry was the development, installation, and use of the diesel engine in trucks in 1933. By 1961 Garrett routes stretched some 13,600 route miles. Major acquisitions expanded the Garrett system to the point that they operated 67 terminals in 10 western states in the 1960s, taking great pride in its road fleet for over 3500 units. After 65 years of continuous service, Garrett, together with Graves and Associated became part of the American Natural Resources Company (ANR System) in 1979.
