    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of a late 1940s STERLING Model RWS160H Tandem-Axle Truck pulling a California-Style 3-Axle Full Trailer Operated by MOJAVE CORPORATION of Los Nietos, CA.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This handsome late 1940s STERLING tandem truck and California-Style 3-Axle Full Trailer is hauling a load of stacked bags of cement, lime, or drilling mud, with a hand cart on top of the load at the rear of the trailer.  This unit is operated by MOJAVE Corporation of Los Nietos, California. The truck is carrying tire chains for west coast winter mountain snow. Rather than using fender-mounted electric turn signals, the cab has west-coast style semaphore turn signals on the rear of the cab.
One kind eBay viewer wrote me that when he hauled bagged cement in AZ in the ‘old days’, this was exactly like he loaded his truck and trailer. He said the stacks had to be just right, leaning forward just a bit, so you could pull them back once the toe of the hand cart was under them. He stressed how important it was to get the first couple of rows started right.
In the late 1940s, Sterling was focusing on the West Coast market, proven to do the ‘tough jobs’ and still maintain maximum operating efficiency with their lightweight RWS Model that had been introduced in 1946. This truck featured 4-wheel worm drive, and a 672-cid 150-HP Cummins HB600 diesel engine.
My original vintage photo was part of the photo collection of the late Fred J. Perkins of Weston, MA, a well known east coast Sterling truck enthusiast.
HISTORY OF STERLING: STERLING began as the STERNBERG Motor Truck Co. in Milwaukee in 1907, but because of anti-German sentiments at the beginning of WWI, the name was changed to STERLING in 1916.  Sterling was an early user of Cummins Diesels in 1932.  Sterlings were generally a premium heavy-duty truck built for severe service, and were very popular on the West Coast and in the New England states.  One popular sales feature of the Sterling was the Oak Insert in the Frame Rails, meant to take heavy impacts and heavy loads. Sterling continued chain drive longer than most other U. S. truck manufacturers, the last HB2002D being built in 1952 as a Sterling-White.  In June 1951 Sterling was bought by White Motor Company, and the name was changed to Sterling-White. In 1953 all Milwaukee operations were moved to the White plant in Cleveland. The last mass-produced Sterling-Whites were in 1954. Approximately 12,000 Sterlings were produced over their 50 year lifetime. The Sterling trucks of Milwaukee had no connection what-so-ever with the renamed Ford truck that Freightliner/Daimler-Benz tried to market as Sterling from 1997 to 2009.
