This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of what I believe is a MARION 5561 STRIPPING SHOVEL at an unknown location.

DESCRIPTION: This MARION Stripping Shovel is working at an unknown location. Presumably an early MARION 5561 with knee-action front end. Two Caterpillar D-8 cable bulldozers are preparing a pad for the Marion to move forward. Great detail.
MARION 5561 STRIPPING SHOVEL: These Marion shovels introduced in 1940 were the first equipped with the knee-action crowd front end, replacing the earlier 5560 series that used the counter-balanced hoist method like the Bucyrus-Erie large strippers of that time. With a working weight of 3,575,000 lbs., the average bucket capacity was 40-CY. One known Marion 5561 owned by Peabody Coal built in 1942 worked into the 1980s before being scrapped. Total Marion production of the 5561 series was 17 shovels during its production run from 1940 to 1956.
